The Pursuit of Perfection

One of my most treasured memories in college is playing football for Coach C. Wayne Perry of Hanover College. He held the record for most career NCAA wins for all divisions. We were Division III but he always felt that although we were small we could, should and would always strive to be the best. He would very routinely ask you to repeat his mantra of “Good, Better, Best!” We never stop until our Good is Better and our Better is Best. I do believe this vision of striving toward perfection always gave us the mentality that we were the best and we were going to work hard to achieve perfection on an off the field. I strongly believe that Haggard & Stocking is one of the better distributors in the country. I don’t want to stop until our better is best. With that said, I have introduced, to the sales team, a visual that depicts what I believe to be Haggard & Stocking’s Core Beliefs and Philosophies that will help guide us toward that path to perfection. I believe that as we work hard and diligently, while maintaining the columns of our core beliefs, we will truly be on the path toward perfection.

As Coach Perry always challenged his teams, I am asking you…are you working to improve your good to better and your better to best? Thank you Coach!

Value-Based Philosophy—It is our belief that if we live out the following values in our day-to-day business, then our ideal vision can be attainable. Our philosophy utilizes the foundation of diligence and four symbolic pillars that are: Loyalty, Professionalism, Competence, and Integrity. The foundation and pillars of our philosophy will lead to our constant pursuit of perfection.

Diligence—The virtue of hard work is an integral factor in our Philosophy. In fact, Diligence is the foundation for the ideals that Haggard & Stocking are committed. Hard work is not just getting through the day, but it is when a person is fully-focused and engaged in their work.

Loyalty—The first pillar of Haggard & Stocking’s values is loyalty. Loyalty is the allegiance that everyone in our organization possesses, to hold our values in the highest regard. It is also the allegiance we have to our customers to create an economic and efficient environment for them.

Professionalism—Professionalism is our promise to present ourselves with the utmost respect to our customers and associates.

Competence—Competence is the promise that we will be effectively educated in all aspects of our business, and aware of the constant changes within the market.

Integrity—Integrity is the strength in which a person upholds their moral code. As an organization, we have the responsibility to display integrity in all that we do in our business ventures. Also, our employees should demonstrate integrity as individuals in, not only business, but all aspects of their lives.

Pursuit of Perfection—John Wooden, a 20-time national championship college basketball coach, once wrote, “Perfection, as I understand it, is not attainable by mortal man. Striving for it, however, is very attainable. And I strove for it ceaselessly.” With the Wooden mentality, Haggard & Stocking is constantly striving for perfection, and through the use of our core values we bring ourselves nearer to our goal each day.

Executive Power

Looking out the window on this bright, snowy Spring day, one wonders how this country and its economic prowess will fare as we move forward in 2013. There are positive signs from worker productivity, consumer spending, housing starts, corporate balance sheets, and the state of energy. Yes, the American Energy sector is moving forward at pace unheard of just a few years ago. The US will become energy independent in a few years, and that’s positive news!

Yet, I’m disappointed after reading an article from various business executives regarding the political system in Washington. Dysfunction in Washington is as common as a hot dog at the ballpark. It is the new normal that we have come to know. I just hope we never come to the point of accepting the current situation. Stalemate and division are not tolerated for long in the business world, especially when it’s a detriment to revenues and profits. Politicians are different animals. They lack a unity of purpose on both sides of the aisle. If those in Washington fail to acknowledge that their actions are not helping American productivity, GNP, cost of living and everyday Americans outlook on the future, then maybe they should consider that they are harming the nation! Where would we be headed if Washington was determined to assist current economic positives? Stephen Covey explores the actions of setting aside differences between two alternatives and forging a third option. A third option is much deeper than compromise –its tackles how to best serve the end game via a solution! Imagine a government that seeks a solution to problems, enlists input from multiple sources and acts to move the ideal forward. Sounds a lot like how your business is run doesn’t it?

As we complete the first quarter of 2013 can we predict the business climate for the next 9 months? My response is, “No”. With the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act ,“Obamacare”, looming on the horizon in January 2014, I know many small businesses are evaluating whether to expand or attempt to stay below the 50-employee threshold so as to lessen its impact. Regardless of the distension in congress, H&S is proceeding with our plans for growth. By May 1, 2013 our new Greensboro, NC warehouse will be operational as we expand our presence in North Carolina. Throughout the U.S. we will be targeting new opportunities for implementation of our Vending and Vendor Managed programs in various markets. H&S has the ability to compete with mega-distributors by offering similar types of services; however, we are better at delivering on our promises and commitments due to our smaller scale, which allows for greater flexibility and fast response. Our mission statement states, “We diligently work for the betterment of our customers, and it is our duty to create a more economic and efficient environment for them. Through this mentality, our customers will become more profitable, and we will become a vital aspect that is crucial for their success.” As you can see, even with uncertainty looming ahead H&S has chosen to remain proactive rather than reactive and it is this mindset that allows us to accomplish tasks and goals other distributors cannot. As Virgil said, “Fortune favors the bold”.

In the news: Cribmaster 2012 Distributor of the Year

Haggard & Stocking is committed to providing our customers with superior products and services and has fully committed resources to a vending services division. After an exhaustive search of the vending solutions arena, H&S has chosen Cribmaster to partner with as our primary vending solution provider. Due to our commitment and growth in this market, Haggard & Stocking has become one of Cribmaster’s master distributors and the largest independent Cribmaster distributor in North America. H&S has shown its commitment by expanding our staff to include two dedicated vending specialists along with the ongoing training of our staff to specialize in the vending solutions market.

Through these efforts, Haggard & Stocking has placed machines and systems in many companies in the Midwest and across the nation. To date, over 142 machines have been placed or are in the process of being implemented. Most recently, Haggard & Stocking sent 8 delegates to Cribmaster’s National User’s conference in Nashville, Tennessee. Shannon Jackson of Haggard & Stocking was honored with presenting our case study of an innovative vending solution implemented in cooperation with our customer partner L-3. The highlight of the conference was Haggard & Stocking’s recognition of being named the Regional Distributor of the year for 2012 by Cribmaster.
